Ingredient Deep Dive

Castor Oil in Soap Making

Castor oil is a thick, sticky oil never used alone in soap but prized as a lather booster. Even a small amount (5–10%) dramatically stabilizes and enhances the bubble quality of any soap recipe.

Benefits

  • + Boosts and stabilizes lather dramatically
  • + Creates a creamier, more luxurious bubble texture
  • + Only 5–10% needed for noticeable effect
  • + Especially useful in shampoo bars

Potential Issues

Using more than 10% can make soap soft, sticky, or slow to cure. Castor oil can also accelerate trace slightly in some formulations.

Pairing Tips

Add at 5–8% to almost any recipe for better lather. Pair with coconut oil (bubbles) and olive oil or shea butter (conditioning). Essential in shampoo bar formulations.
