Ingredient Deep Dive

Olive Oil in Soap Making

Olive oil is the most classic and versatile oil in handmade soap making. It produces a mild, gentle bar with a creamy, lotion-like lather. High olive oil soaps require longer curing but reward with exceptional mildness.

Benefits

  • + Produces mild, gentle soap suitable for all skin types
  • + Creates a creamy, stable lather
  • + Rich in antioxidants and skin-conditioning oleic acid
  • + Can be used as 100% of oils in traditional Castile soap

Potential Issues

High olive oil soaps take longer to trace and require extended curing (6+ months for pure Castile). The lather is creamy rather than fluffy, which some people may not prefer.

Pairing Tips

Pair with coconut oil for better lather and hardness. Add castor oil at 5–10% to boost bubbles. Shea butter complements the mildness of olive oil for extra conditioning.
